Contemporary love songs today don’t even compare to these poems. I think that, compared to today’s popular love songs, poems have deeper feelings and emotions regarding love. In my opinion, songs that are popular, the ones that are usually over played on the radio, seem so shallow to me. I remember back when love songs were like poems accompanied with music. The popular songs on the radio used to be about genuine love and feelings, not just all about sex. Now a days, the only genre, in my opinion, that has the capacity to have real emotion in music and within the lyrics of their songs is country, which is the one genre that a lot of people I know won’t listen to. Thinking of modern songs that we hear every day as poems, I think just the diction alone completely separates songs from poetry. Contemporary songs usually have profanity throughout the entire song, which completely destroys the emotional feeling, if any, that the writer was trying to achieve. I think the writers of these songs, rather than coming from the heart, just do it for the money. Poets have that compassion in their work that makes it desirable to read; poems themselves have a romantic and emotional connotation within them which makes them the perfect candidate for expressing love. Writers seem to have the drive and desire to express these feelings, while song writers seem to do it for popularity. There seems to be this pressure for song writers to write that new number one hit and they’re based on what they feel the public wants to hear.
I know when I turn on the radio, there are always songs on there that, regardless of what it’s about, it’s related somehow to sex. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely songs out there that don’t, that are tasteful. However, I think it’s getting more apparent that the songs about sex are not only the most popular, but there’s so many of them! I know I may be going on a tangent here, but I starting thinking about just the concept of listening to music and reading alone. When I was younger, I was really into reading, in high school I couldn’t stand it and I turned to listening to music. I see that a lot; a lot of people I know would rather sit in a room by themselves and listen to popular music rather than reading a book. Looking at our society today, I think it’s really obvious that this is occurring and it seems to be getting worse. Especially after being in college, I’ve learned the rewarding aspects of reading, and the emotion within poetry can even be overwhelming, definitely an experience that I could never get listening to contemporary music.

Hahaha ok so I totally laughed out loud when you said that country music was the only type of music that actually dealt with the deeper emotions of love, and that no one listens to it. Because that is so true. Lol and I have to say that I completely agree that most love songs nowadays don’t hold the same meaning as they did back in the day. I think that most modern love songs are pretty shallow and that they’re more about the sexual aspect of love. Oh and we are one in the same when it comes to this topic because most of your points were very similar to mine and it seems like we took the same approach to it as well. I mean, it’s like we coordinated our blogs. Haha I don’t think that most modern writers just write love songs for money, I think they just write it and that’s about it. They’re not capable of much else than earning money for writing about how many women they slept with and how many bottles of Don Perion (no idea if I spelled that right haha) it took to get there.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree 100% that you cannot compare these poems to todays love songs, it would be degrading the poem to the fullest. Love songs today are not even about love anymore, or at least the rap ones. Rappers along with most rockers seem to think that love and sex go hand in hand, which they do not at all. Anyone can have sex and love is not needed, but to have and know love is soemthing beuatiful and is something that has to be worked for. You don't just meet someone and instantly fall in love. So I agree that comparing todays music with these poems is not a comparison. I cannot believe how many songs I hear and my mouth literally drops when I hear the lyrics and think that there are small children and young teens listening to these songs, not only are they showing divorce and sex more on tv, but now our youth is being subjected to it through music which is very influential. It makes me sick to my stomach that this is the standard we are setting for our future America. Is it really any wonder why our teens are going out having sex, doing drugs and going through partners like panties? I think we have set them up for this type of life style, we have nobody to blame but ourselves. It is one of those slippery slope issues, if this is being allowed on the radio now what next?
ReplyDeleteI really agree with your view of modern music in this blog. Many of the reasons that you pointed out are why I generally stay away from it myself anymore. I think you are completely right on the money aspect of things too. So often it seems that songs are written to be hits, and not for themselves. There are some songs out there that are legit, that are real, but there are also so many that are not. I mean if you think about it, there are professional songwriters out there who write songs for other people. Now I have nothing against them, they are greatly talented, I just don't like the idea of people singing songs they did not even write. When it is not words that they wrote themselves, it loses something in my eyes. This is an all the time thing, but in some situations, I just feel that a song should not be sung by someone who did not write it.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that sex is way too predominant anymore. So many songs focus only on sex in one aspect or another, and its disgusting really. In my opinion, music is something that should be beautiful and inspiring, not just telling stories about sex or other topics of the sort. Also, cussing is not at all necessary either. Plain and simple. I greatly agree with your views on this topic, well put! Great blog.
I really liked reading your blog. You made a lot of very good and interesting points. It really is true what you said about how the love songs of today really can’t compare to the poems that were written such a long time ago. Many of the poems back then just seemed to go more deeper, and I think that many poems did a good job of expressing their feelings. And yes I agree with you, I also think that many of the love songs that we hear on the radio today are just so shallow. I think that many of the so called “love songs” that we hear today are songs that go more into lust than actual true love. Yeah it’s true, the profanity scattered throughout these songs also does a great job of destroying the message. Regardless as to whether or not people want to admit to the fact that music has such a powerful influence on people today, especially young people like myself, it really truly does. I think the sad thing is, people are being led to believe that true love is what they hear on the radios, when in most cases it is not.
